MBBS Course Details

Name of the Course:  Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)

Number of Seats: One Hundred and Fifty (150)

Eligibility Criteria for Admission:

• Candidates must have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognized board, council or university and must have passed in the subjects of physics, chemistry, biology /biotechnology and English individually and must have obtained a minimum of 50% marks in physics, chemistry, biology /biotechnology taken together. Candidates should have passed English as compulsory subject. For candidates belonging to SC/ST or OBC, the minimum qualifying marks is 45% in above three subjects taken together and for the candidates having lower limb disability as defined by NMC/ MCI, the minimum qualifying score is 45% for above three subjects taken together. Prevailing NMC regulations shall apply at the time of admission.

•Candidates must have qualified in NEET examination and obtained minimum score of 50th percentile in NEET 2023. However, for candidates belonging to SC/ST category the minimum qualifying score is 40th percentile and for the candidates having disability of lower limb as defined by NMC the minimum qualifying score is 45th percentile. However, the score mentioned is modified by the Government of India / NMC, the revised qualifying score shall be applicable for respective categories.

•Candidate shall complete the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the MBBS Course.
•Candidates seeking admission in MBBS course for 2023-24 session have to apply for NEET examination directly to National Testing Agency or agent authorised by Government of India/NMC. For the purpose of admission, after qualifying the NEET examination the candidate must apply through WBMCC, Government of West Bengal or any other agency authorised by Government of West Bengal for that purpose.

•No direct application for admission in MBBS course shall be entertained by college or the university.

Duration of Course: 5 ½ years (including one-year internship)

Examination:

First Professional MBBS Examination (Pre-Clinics)
First Professional examination is conducted after first two semesters. It comprises three basic subjects, viz. Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry. Anatomy, where one must understand the physical structure and function of the human body, Physiology, where one will learn how all the body parts work in harmony; and Biochemistry, which allows one to grasp the molecular structure and function of the system.

Second Professional MBBS Examination (Para-Clinics)
Second professional examination is conducted at the end of the 4th semester. This tenure provides the opportunity to learn the Para-clinical subjects, such as Microbiology, where one learns about various micro-organisms that cause human diseases; Pathology, which teaches the cause, underlying mechanism, and result of every type of disease; and Pharmacology, in which one learns about the details of drugs and their uses. The departments trained the student according to new medical education curriculum focusing on observable ability in real-life situations.

Third Professional MBBS Examination (Clinics)
Aim is to deal with the entire clinical subject, trains in the hospital at bedside of the patient. During this period student learn more about the diagnosis and possible management of a particular disease. They also directed to attend and manage emergency cases under guidance. For the sake of convenience this entire tenure is divided into two parts.

Third Professional MBBS Part-1 (10.5 Months)
Two semesters are dedicated to Forensic Medicine and Toxicology and Community Medicine. Department of community medicine prepares students for dealing with different public health issues and their prevention. The Forensic Medicine and Toxicology (FMT) focuses mainly on different legal and forensic aspects needed in medicine as well as effects of various toxic substances.

Third Professional MBBS Part-Il (17.5 Months)
The course consists of three semesters, where students are trained in bed side clinical training (e.g. diagnosis and management of a particular disease) in General Medicine, Psychiatry, TB & Chest, Dermatology, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology (ENT), Orthopaedics, Obstetrics &  Gynaecology and Paediatrics including Neonatology.

Compulsory Rotatory Internship
This is an integral part of the MBBS program, where a student learns the diagnosis and treatment of different diseases as he/she rotates through different disciplines of clinical subjects. After completion of this period he /she is to be considered for award of the MBBS degree.

Periodic assessment examinations
Besides University examinations (Regular and Supplementary), the College Authority regularly holds periodic assessment examinations as per the guidelines of the controlling University in the form of theory, practical/clinical, viva-voce and also day-to-day assessment. Departments also conducts some other special examinations like Class-Assistantship/ Prosectorship etc.
